Exposure and Response Prevention
The Gold Standard Treatment for OCD and Anxiety
If you live with OCD or anxiety, you've probably spent a lot of time trying to feel certain, safe, or "just right." Maybe you avoid situations that trigger anxiety, repeatedly seek reassurance, mentally review conversations, check things over and over, or perform rituals that temporarily make the discomfort go away.
The problem is that while these behaviors provide short-term relief, they also teach your brain that the anxiety was something you needed to escape. Over time, the cycle grows stronger.
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) helps break that cycle.
What Is ERP?
ERP is the most effective, research-supported treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and is also highly effective for many anxiety disorders and phobias.
Rather than trying to eliminate intrusive thoughts or stop anxiety from showing up, ERP helps you gradually face the situations, thoughts, images, or sensations that trigger fear while learning to resist the compulsions, avoidance, or safety behaviors that keep anxiety alive.
As you practice, your brain begins to learn something new: anxiety and uncertainty are uncomfortable—but they aren't dangerous, and they don't have to control your decisions.
What Does ERP Look Like?
Every treatment plan is individualized, but ERP often includes:
Identifying the fears, situations, or triggers that keep you stuck
Understanding the compulsions, avoidance, reassurance seeking, or mental rituals that maintain the cycle
Creating a gradual, manageable hierarchy of exposures
Practicing exposures together during sessions and continuing them between appointments
Learning how to respond to intrusive thoughts with greater flexibility rather than trying to eliminate them
ERP isn't about forcing yourself into overwhelming situations. It's about taking meaningful, achievable steps that build confidence over time.
Isn't ERP Scary?
Many people worry that ERP means being thrown into their worst fear on the first day.
That's not how I practice.
ERP is collaborative, compassionate, and tailored to your readiness. We'll move at a pace that's challenging enough to promote growth while still feeling manageable. You will never be forced into an exposure you're not ready for, and you'll never have to face the process alone.
More Than Exposure
Although ERP is the foundation of treatment for OCD, I often integrate principles from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients develop a healthier relationship with uncertainty, intrusive thoughts, and difficult emotions.
The goal isn't to stop having anxious thoughts.
The goal is to help you stop organizing your life around them.
